The Short Stories

If you answer any five of the following questions in a thoughtful way, you may earn 20 extra points toward your test score on the last four stories. A thoughtful response will be at least three sentences.

Form: Please begin your responses in this way: Joan S. comments: (first name and initial of last name) Answer in complete sentences using standard English. Please number each response.
1. Consider the two short stories, "Lady or the Tiger?" and "Tell-Tale Heart." What insights do the authors suggest about the criminal justice system?
2. In the "Tell-Tale Heart," the narrator believes he is sane. What do you consider to be sane? When does a person become criminally insane?
3. In the "Lady or the Tiger?" the princess has a decision to make. Which rules stronger: jealousy or love? Support your response with examples from the story and/or from real life observations.
4. "The Third Wish" and "The Monkey's Paw" explore the wishes of people. What do the wishes of the characters suggest about human character? If you had been one of the characters, would you have reacted in the same or a different way?
5. In "The Monkey's Paw," the Whites are warned about the paw. Why did they not heed the warning?
6. Recall the third wish in "The Monkey's Paw." Was there another wish Mr. White could have made? What might it have been?
7. In "The Third Wish," Mr. Peters does not use his third wish. Why?
8. What are the conflicts in each of the short stories? What similarities and differences do these conflicts have?
9. Of all the characters in the short stories, which one are you most like? Give at least three ways you are like that character.

  2. 2. I consider sane to be mentally healty. A person becomes criminally sane when he/she is over the "norm" line for insanity.

    4. The wishes a person makes tells others about their character in that, if they wish for riches when they already have plenty, they are selfish. However, if they wish for others to be happy, then they must be either a good person with a kind heart, or a really good actor/actress.

    5. The Whites did not "heed" the warning because they wanted to 1) see if it works, 2) try and get their lost son back, and 3) keep anything bad from happening again.

    7. I don't think he used his third wish because he did not know how to use it without hurting anyone. I believe though, if he did use it, it would have been to wish for an eternity of peace or something like that. That would explain why the wish was wrinkled up.

    10. The Tell-Tale Heart- Insanity
    Lady or the Tiger- Trust
The Third Wish- What the Heart Wants
The Monkey's Paw- You've been Warned

    2. Sane can be viewed as a person who knows exactly what they are doing, knows exactly of the consequences, and is reasonable and practical about the whole matter. A person becomes criminally insane when they perform a crime in an absurd, unreasonable, insensible way.

    4. Their wishes tell us that humans are alwasy looking for something more than what they have; they always want more and more and more. If I had been one of the characters, of course I would've acted differently; it's obvious that whatever I would wish for would come around and bite me so I wouldn't wish for anything and move on with life.

    5. Because Herbert wanted his family to become even happier and he thought that would happen by having to stop paying on the house. His parents understood the reasoning and the father wished. They didn't listen in the hopes of becoming even happier.

    7. I think he DOES use his third wish. I think he was rather unhappy with his wife a swan. Mr. Peters wanted to be happy and so he used his third wish and asked for happiness and since no one knows exactly what happens after death--whether it's bliss and peace or something else--the magic killed him to bring him what he wished for.

    2. I consider insane to be where people go in hysterics and act unsual. A person becomes criminally insane, when he or she starts thinking as a criminal, and is hearing things.

    3. Jealousy, since all she thought about was how her lover and the young lady, had always talked and how her lover had lookded at the lady.

    5. They probably did not care about the warnings, since they were already broke and had nothing to lose. So they wished.

    7. He did not use his last wish, because he was already happy and had no need for the last wish.

    10.
Monkey's paw: Wish if you dare.
Lady or the Tiger?: Luck or Death
    Third Wish: Love or Happiness?
Tell-Tale Heart: Insanity at its worst.

    2. I believe that sane is when you are either seico or mentally challenged to a point that it makes you seico. I think a person becomes criminally sane when they go crazy and start breaking a lot of laws and start murdering people.
    3. I believe that in the story The Lady Or The Tiger, jealousy over-rules love. Because the princess loved him but did not want to see her love with someone else. Therefor I think she told him the door with the ferocious tiger. If it would have been me choosing the door to tell him I would have chose love over jealousy. Because I would rather see my love alive and happy than being shredded into a million pieces.
    7. I think that Mr.Peters did not use his third wish. The reason I think that is because he had already made his wife happy by turning her back into a swan to be with her sister. Therefot I think that him seing her happy made him happy so he did not have to use his third wish because he was already so happy.
    9. I think that I am more like the swan than any other character. Because 1) I always think about being some animal/ or being different than others just like Mr.Peters was different by wishing to marry a swan. 2) Once I had the oppurtunity to be different than other I would want to go back to being my normal self just like the swan wanted to go back to being a swan. 3) I love my family and I would rather be with them than being with someone else just like Mr.Peters wife wanted to turn back into a swan so she could be with her sister.
    10. Monkey's Paw: Careful What You Wish For!
Lady or the Tiger: Jealousy or Love?
Third Wish: Choose Love or Happiness but Only One!

  6. 2. I believe that when someone becomes insane, they start degrading themselves or insulting themselves in various forms on purpose, or for no apparent reason.

    4. Their wishes tell us that humans don't realize what they have until it's gone, and that we will always look for something better. I would have probably reacted in the same way.

    5. The family obviously wasn't from the "rich" part of town, so most families would probably wish for some sort of money, or wish for selfish needs or for other people.

    7. Mr. Peters probably didn't need to use his wish. I believe that he was truly happy. I believe that he was accually happy and was saving the wish for a time when he really did need it.

    Tell-Tale Heart: Misunderstood

    2. I think sane is when a person has the ability to control themselves in stressful situations. Some don’t control it but they have the ability so I think that they are sane. Insane would be when a person can’t control their actions. The person in the story could control himself when he saw the man’s eye.

    5. They think that if troubles come from the first wish they can use the others to counteract it. They are also prideful because other people don’t have the paw. There rush to become rich lost them their son.

    6. Yes, and if I was him it would have been for it to go back to the day before Major Morris came so then I could use the wishes more wisely.

    7. Because he was happy where he was. Even when his wife turned back into a swan he still felt as if he was happy when his swan wife was happy. He could have used his first wish more wisely, but he still turned out happy.

    10. Give each of the short stories a new title. Lady or the Tiger: Slaughter or a Second Chance
    Tell-Tale-Heart: Innocent Murder
    Third Wish: A Mourning Swan
The Monkey's Paw: A Loss of a Loved One

    3. I think love rules stronger because if you truly love someone then
you aren't jealous. In the Bible in 1 Corinthians 13 is says, "Love
always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always preseveres." So if
you love, you protect and trust, which is something that the princess
would have done in the situation.
    4. In Monkey's Paw and Third wish, it shows that humans are greedy and
only wish for wants and not needs. In the Third Wish he wished for a
wife. That is pretty greedy. Monkey's Paw they wish for money. Then
again, that's greedy. Depending on my lifestyle is how I would have
wished. If I was starvingly poor I would have wished. If I had my life,
I would have listened and not wished.
    5. I think that they wished because they didn't realize what they had
and wanted more. It goes back to the greedy thing. The info from Major
Morris went into one ear and out the other.
    6. Mr. White could have wished that all of his wishes were undone
instead of wishing what he did. It would have gotten rid of his
    problems
    10. Third Wish- Swan Sisters
    Tell-Tale Heart- Insane
    Monkey's Paw- Dangerous Wishes
Lady or the Tiger- Take Your Pick.

  9. 2) I consider sane as an action of controlness. if a person is sane he/she has the ability to calm themselves and they behave properly. A person becomes criminally insane when he/she cannot keep themselves under control and they begin bhaving inappropiatly. An insae person may perform outrageous actions or say crazy things.

    4) The character's wishes tell us about their personality. For instance, if they wish for something for themselves and wish for them to be happy, they are being greedy. Usually that is when the wish turns out bad. But if they wish for something else that is not all about them, it shows that they are not selfish and they possibly care about others. I would have acted/wished differently by most likely wishing for something good that includes everyone.

    5) The Whites did not "heed" the warning because Herbert wanted to try and make his family happier. Obviously he/they became greedy and the wishes backfired on them. They were too busy worrying about making the wishes and getting there "prizes".

    7) In a way I think that Mr.Peters uses his third wish. I think that he seen his wife was not happy and everything was going wrong so he wished for happiness and death was the answer. He got what he wished for..

10)The Third Wish: WHAT COMES WITH HAPPINESS?

Tell-Tale-Heart: INSANITY CAUSED BY THE OLD MAN

Monkey's Paw: BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR

Lady or the Tiger: WHAT WILL YOU CHOOSE?

    ReplyDelete
  10. 2.) I think the word "sane" means the exact opposite of the word "insane". I think the general meaning of the word is basically "not crazy". I think a person becomes crminally insane when he/she finds pleasure in doing some kind of crime. He/she likes to gain controll of each situation.

4.) The wishes that the Whites made suggest that humans are never happy with the things that they have, and cant learn to appreciate the little, yet inportant things they already have. If I were one of the characters, I would have reacted differently because I would have realized that every wish turns out the way you didn't want it.

5.) I think the Whites didnt "heed" the warning about the paw because they didn't think it would work anyway. Also, I think they were too desperate for their son and money that they didn't have the sense to reason.

7.) In " The Third Wish" , Mr. Peters does not use his third wish because he is happy the way he is. Tending to his garden, and visiting his beloved wife and her sister every day even after Leita took her former shape as a swan. Mr. Peters dies very happy, and peacefully.

10.) The Third Wish- " Only for Love "
    Tell-Tale-Heart- " The Opposite of Sane "
The Monkey's Paw- " When Good Things Go Bad "
Lady or the Tiger- " Two Doors Down "

  11. 2. I think sane means that you are basically under control of everything going on in your life. I think a person becomes criminally insane when they can't get control of things going on in their life so they try to find escapes or things that make them happy which may mean doing some crazy things.

    5. I don't think the White's heeded the warning about the paw because I think they were so greedy that they didn't care about the consequences. They were somewhat naive and wanted things for themselves.

    6. Mr. White could have wished for everything to go back to the way they were before. He could have wished for the paw to not have even been nrought to their house, or found its way to them.

    9. Of all the characters in the short stories, I think that I am most like Mr. White. I am the type to atuomatically jump to the biggest and best things instead of weighing out all my options first. I would be the one to see the big shiny paw and wish for anything I wanted. I am also like him because I would be naive in my decisions much like he was and then get into deeper trouble.

  12. 2. i believe that a person is sane when they are crazy enough to do things that they know would mess up there life for example the man in tell-tale heart was sane h messed up his life by killing that man

    4. I would have acted the same way i might have enjoyed being another creature just see what it would feel like to be in somebody's shoes. I wouldn't want my husband grieving and it was my fault of the cause and i had the chance to do something about it.

    5. They didn't ignore the warning because they had never been given something so valuable. They thought they could just wish for all the things life never brought them

    6. He could have wished for Herbert to look descent and be alive because i strongly believe that the creature at the door was Herbert

    7. He doesn't use his last wish because he won't have a wish to undo the mistake the third wish made

    2. When someone acts civilized and doesn't do things for no reason. When someone is insane they'll do whatever they want just because they feel like it.
3.I think jealousy ruled stronger because she was very jealous of girls that even talked to him so in my opinion I think he was sent to the tiger.
    5. I think they didn't heed the warning because they thought that they were just trying keep them from getting what they deserved.

    2. I believe that sane is when someone acts extremely unusual compared to everyone else. Whether or not they are the ones doing the right thing is beyond the point. I think that "criminally insane" means when a person commits a crime that makes them go outside of the "SANITY" boundary.
    5. I think the Whites didn't listen to the warning because they thought it was a joke. Sometimes when people need money, they'll stop at nothing to get it and then they got really greedy. Once they realized he was dead, they tried to get him back unharmed. However it didn't happen and the story ends on a melancholy note.
6.I think that Mr White could've mad a wish for The Creature at the Door(Herbert) to go away because it was scaring him and his wife.
    7. I think a wish he could've made was for happiness. however, I do not believe he did because he decided(with his 2nd Wish) that he would rather be unhappy then take someone else's happiness. think he didn't use the 3rd wish because he would rather be unhappy than to see others unhappy.

  17. 2. I believe that a person is sane when they have everything in their life under control and don't act as though there is something wrong at all times, like going overboard wit acting crazy. People become criminally insane when they jump to killing or hurting someone in any way just because of little things. An example would be the "Tell-Tale Heart" when he kills the man because of his eye.

    4. These stories suggest that some are selfish and will do whatever it takes to get what they want. Then when they realize what they did they regret it. Then there are some who will do anything for others before their own happiness.

    5. They didn't heed the warnings because they didn't care . They knew that the paw was very powerful and it could get them anything. No one cares about the warnings or consequences when they're focused on what they would like.

    7. He didn't use his 3rd wish because he was content with himself and his wife's happiness. He saved it for a time when he could need it for his own concerns or someone else's.

  19. 2. I consider sane to be in the right mind or making good decisions. A person who knows what is wrong from right. Someone is criminally insane if they go nuts and get themselves into deep trouble and possibly end up killing or injuring someone.

    5. The Whites did not heed the warning about the monkeys paw because they knew the paw had power to fix everything and they thought that maybe the person that gave the warning just wanted the paw to himself.

    6. I think there was another wish that Mrs. White could have made for her third wish. She could have said like she wanted everything back to the way it was beore they found the monkey,s paw.

    7. I believe that in The Third Wish, Mr. Peters does not use his third wish because he is afraid that the king of the forest will twist his words and make his wish to turn out as something that he never wanted to happen like on his first wish when he used it to wish for a wife. It turned out that she did not like being human.

    8. The conflicts in each short stories are: in The Third Wish, Mr. Peters has trouble with wondering what to wish for which is pretty much the same for The Monkey's Paw. The conflict for Tell Tale Heart is that the man doesnt know wether he should kill the old man or not. And in Lady or the Tiger, The conflict is that the princess must decide to see her loved one be married to another woman or see him get killed by the tiger.

    2. I believe that pure sanity does not exist. Everybody has at least one little thing that makes them tick and drives them literaly insane. Criminal insanity on the other hand is a type of insanity where people are so insane to the point that they participate in crimnal acts.
    3. I believe that if the princess was really in love she would have told the king. If somebody is in love with another person then why wouldn't they want to scream it at the top of their lungs and not care who hears? If she was really in love she would've fought for it. That leads me to believe that the princess told her lover to open the door with the tiger behind it because I think that she was thinking 'well if I can't be with him nobody can.'
    5. When people hear the words 'three wishes' they are going to jump at the oppurtunity and wish for a million dollars or a hummer or something. That's just human nature. When people see something that can benefit them in anyway they are going to go for it because all people are selfish.
    7. Instead of wishing Herbert dead again as their third wish, Mr. and Mrs. White could've wished that he was all in one piece and back to the way he was before he died. No one could be sure of what would have happened after that though . . . . .

    1. I think that both of those stories suggest that the criminal justice system is very different as time prgresses. It also shows that different cultures have different ideas about what is fair

    2. I think sanity is relative. In some tribes of Africa, they believe that the right dances performed by the right people will cure a sickness, and it's totally normal for them. Here, that would be considered insane. However, when one thinks he is justified in killing another human being, he is criminally insane, in my opinion.

    4. I think both of the authors of the two stories have different ideas about human character. But, they both believe that meddling with fate is not a good thing. In both stories, bad things happened to the person who made any type of wish. In one story, a person died because somebody wished for money, in the other, a person was killed because he wished for love.

    7. He doesn't use his third wish because he's dead.

  23. 3. I beleive love would win over, because if the princess really loved him that much, she would not be able to watch him die. It just all depends on the kind of person she was.

    4. In "The Third Wish", Mr. Peters was unselfish and thought of others first. In "The Monkey's Paw", though, the Whites only thought of what they wanted, and not what was best for themselves and others. I would compare myself to Mr. Peters.

    5. I think the Whites didn't heed the warnings because they did not know what would happen when they wished.

    6. Yes, Mr. White could have wished for his son to look absolutely normal and not like he had been sliced up and killed by a machine.

    9. I think I am like Mr. Peters, because I would much rather have a loved one be happy, no matter what the cost was for me.

  24. 3. I beleive that if the princess really loved him she would let him live and she would have to accept the fact that he couldnt be with her. It mainly depends on how much she loved him or how nice she was as a person.

    4. If I had been one of the others charactors I would have been Mr. Peters because he put others before himself. The white's through only cared for themselves and didn't take the warning seriously that was givin them then they got greedy.

    5. I think they didn't because either they didn't believe that the paw would switch and turn the wishes around or maybe they just did not care wat happened in the process as long as they got the wish.

    7. I think that he didn't use the 3rd wish because he was afraid of what the outcome of it would be because he had already messed up on one of his wishes.

    8. All of these short storries had conflict because the main charactors had to overcome a problem that they faced and most of them were very big and important outcomes depending on which decision they chose.

  27. 2. I consider a sane person to be a person who does not act rashly but instead ponders about something before he acts. I believe a criminally insane person is a person who acts rashly and then tries to justify what he or she has done. I also believe a criminally insane would do something over and over again even though he knows it is wrong and keeps getting caught.

    5. They were selfish. They thought only of the ways it could help them. If you get a magical object think of the consequences and listen to the objects story.

    6. There was definitely another wish they could have made. The wish they could have made was to make their son like he was before the accident. If they had done that even I can’t guess the consequences.

    7. He has learned that with each wish comes a price. The first wish caused a goose to become separated from her sister. The second wish cost him his newfound wife. There is no telling what problems the third wish would have caused.

    10.
The Tell-Tale Heart- Murder, can it be justified by insanity?

The Third Wish- Do you really want to make that wish?

The Monkey’s paw- Know what you’re asking for before you ask.
